Look after yourself

If you don’t look after yourself, nobody else will.

Swans spend a lot of time preening, important for survival.

In Colchester I am building a photographic record of two swan families.  It is a challenge getting good photos of these swans because they often stick their heads into their feathers as they preen themselves.

Swans spend a considerable amount of their day preening, which is the difference between life and death for them.  By preening their feathers swans keep their feathers water-resistant, clean and insulated.  The swans look healthy and beautiful.

If human beings spent as much time as swans looking after their own health there would be fewer illnesses and lower stress.  I often see people investing tons of time, energy and money into cleaning and maintaining their cars, but little of that same dedication to their own bodies.

You can learn a lot from swans about looking after yourself.

  4. I am always appalled at the way so many people treat their own bodies, filling them with the fast food of needlessly killed animals, driving everywhere they go, in spite of high gas prices and a depleting oil supply. Many people just have no endurance for the pain it takes to really look after themselves anymore, and this kind of pain, I believe, is one of our greatest teachers.

    • Civilisation makes people lazy, they are less connected to nature and their own body. Many people dig a hole for themselves which will become ill health and an early grave. Thanks for your comment.

  5. [ Smiles ] Alex, I agree with your article wholeheartedly!
